Scammers and fraudsters are stepping up their efforts with Christmas fast approaching.
Emporia State Federal Credit Union Marketing Director Susie LeGault says credit union members have been receiving calls asking them to verify credit card or debit card transactions — and then launching into requests for personal information like card numbers, CVV codes and expiration dates.
LeGault says the credit union’s card processors were not the ones making the calls. With shopping picking up during the holidays, financial institutions like Emporia State Federal Credit Union and their card processors may reach out to verify transactions — especially if they are large sums of money or push accounts past daily spending limits — but they should never ask for personal information or card information. If that happens, hang up and call your financial institution.
Separately, the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office says residents have started receiving calls from people allegedly representing Evergy. The callers have told residents their service will be shut off unless payment is received.
There are no details on whether residents have been told to pay immediately using prepaid cards, as has been the case with previous scam attempts, but the Sheriff’s Office says residents should not call numbers provided in the call and they should never provide any sensitive or personal information. Residents should hang up and report the call to Evergy.
And Lyon-Coffey Electric, soon to be 4Rivers Electric Cooperative, is reporting two types of scams aimed at customers. Residents are told to use prepaid cards and call a specified number with the card information. They are also told to verify credit card or debit card information or else their service will be shut off immediately.
The electric cooperative says its employees will never ask for confidential, personal information. Residents should hang up and call the company.
