Emporia Police will participate in a special traffic enforcement effort between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Officers will take part in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign that formally starts Dec. 26. Officers will look for numerous traffic infractions as they look to curtail drunk driving.
The Police Department says anywhere from 250 to 300 drivers will be arrested in Kansas for DUI-related driving offenses in the week after Christmas. Regardless of the time of year, three people are hurt and one is killed every day due to alcohol- or drug-related crashes, and impairment crashes are usually more severe than others.
The police effort is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation. It dovetails with a separate enforcement effort, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving, organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Lyon County deputies are involved in the NHTSA effort.
Sheriff Jeff Cope and Police Sgt. Lisa Sage will join KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:40 am Thursday with details.
