The month of December has been a busy month from a foundational standpoint for the new City/County joint emergency radio project.
Lyon County Emergency Manager Jarrod Fell joined KVOE’s Christmas Eve Newsmaker segment to discuss the current happenings around the roughly $4 million replacement project. Fell says all of the buildings which will house the new radio system’s infrastructure have been delivered to the radio tower sites.
Each 10 x 12 square foot building will house all computer and electrical components for the new radio system. Fell says they are still waiting on equipment shipments from Motorolla which were shipped last Friday and are expected to arrive between Thursday and Friday of this week.
According to Fell the new radio system will be a major upgrade and yield a “night and day difference” from the current radio system.
The project will see the city and county switch over from their current Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio system to an 800 MHz trunked system. The new system will provide an increased coverage rate — around 95 percent — for all emergency responders and will see the system connected straight into the Kansas Statewide Interoperability Communication System (KSICS).
The project is anticipated to be completed between June and August 2020.
