Special traffic enforcement efforts are now underway, courtesy of the Emporia Police Department and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.
Both agencies are literally working overtime to spot traffic offenses linked to drunk driving, and Police Sgt. Lisa Sage and Sheriff Jeff Cope joined KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Thursday with more information. Sage says people need to realize drunk driving can kill people.
Aside from the risk of injury or death, Cope said DUI crashes are expensive for drivers who drive while intoxicated, with “astronomical” court costs and attorney fees. They are also restrictive, with a drivers license possibly getting suspended from 30 days to a year and up to a year in jail.
Cope also says officers and deputies will be out and about on these efforts through New Year’s Day.
The Kansas Department of Transportation expects as many as 300 people will be arrested for DUI-related offenses between Thursday and New Year’s Day.
