Lyon County deputies say the Christmas Night incident in Americus where a car hit a house was an accident in every sense of the word.
Deputy Dan Evans says the incident at 302 Seventh Street happened as the homeowner wanted to put his car in reverse but put the vehicle in drive instead. There was a small hole in a wall that developed as a result of the crash. There was also a gas leak that happened when a gas line cracked.
Evans says there was no criminal activity and no criminal intent with the wreck, which happened around 9:30 pm. Nobody was hurt.
11:30 am Thursday: Car drives into house in Americus
Lyon County District Four First Responders, Americus Firefighters and Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call for a gas leak in Americus late Christmas evening.
According to Lyon County Deputies on the scene, the gas leak developed after a car struck a home at 302 7th Street in Americus shortly after 9:30 pm. Deputies say when the vehicle struck the home it caused a gas line inside the residence to break.
The incident is not being treated as a vehicle accident as no injuries were sustained as a result of the car striking the home. Fire crews had the gas to the home shut off quickly before Kansas Gas arrived to repair the ruptured line.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle meant to put the car in reverse and instead put it in drive leading to the car going forward and striking the home. Deputies say the occupants of the vehicle were either the residents of the home or associated with the residents in some way.
