Two individuals were taken to Newman Regional Health following a single-vehicle accident on the Kansas Turnpike Thursday afternoon.
The Emporia Fire Department has confirmed two individuals were taken from the scene of the accident which occurred shortly before 4 pm near KTA mile marker 125 two miles southwest of the Emporia tollgate. According to the fire department, one individual was transported with possibly more serious injuries than the other.
A crash narrative is still pending, however, initial indications are the vehicle left the roadway and went down a steep embankment into a grove of trees possibly hitting one tree head-on. Additional details are currently pending through the Kansas Highway Patrol.

4:40 pm Thursday: UPDATE: Secondary response requested following crash on Kansas Turnpike Thursday afternoon
Emergency crews are currently responding to a reported injury accident that developed on the Kansas Turnpike Thursday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched to the area between KTA mile marker 125 and 126 northbound shortly before 4 pm. Early indications are that a vehicle went off the roadway and came to a rest in a grove of trees and may have possibly been smoking.
A secondary ambulance was called to the scene of the crash shortly after the initial dispatch went out. The cause of the accident and the number occupants inside the vehicle at the time of the accident are currently pending.
