Evergy continues investigating after a major power outage affected central Chase County on Saturday.
Spokesman Andrew Baker tells KVOE News a failed switch at a substation near Cottonwood Falls and Strong City was the reason for the outage, which affected residents in and around both towns for close to seven hours before power was restored. Baker says Cottonwood Falls residents had their power restored first, while Strong City residents got their power back in at least two stages.
Over 370 residents were initially impacted. The number grew to 700 before the restoration efforts started taking hold.

Power was fully restored shortly before 5 pm Saturday evening after a widespread outage left over 700 Chase County residents powerless for most of the day.
A cause of the outage, which developed just before 10 am, has yet to be determined. Initially just over 370 residents from Strong City south on Kansas Highway 177 to Cottonwood Falls were affected before the number rose to over 700 just after noon.
Evergy crews managed to restore power to just over 500 customers before 4 pm and had power fully restored shortly after 5 pm.

3:50 pm Saturday: Evergy restores power to over 500 customers in Chase County; less than 200 still without power
Evergy crews continue efforts to restore a large scale power outage which has affected much of Chase County throughout Saturday.
Over 700 customers between Strong City and Cottonwood Falls were offline due to the outage shortly after noon Saturday. Crews managed to have power restored to all residents in Cottonwood Falls just before 4 pm.
Less than 200 customers in Strong City are still without power, however, Evergy Spokesperson Andrew Baker tells KVOE News the outage is at the top of their priority list at this time. A cause of the outage has still yet to be determined.

12:50 pm Saturday: Outage numbers in Chase County nearly double just after noon
The number of reported outages for Evergy customers in Chase County have risen significantly just two hours since the outage developed Saturday morning.
Outage numbers held steady at just over 370 customers through the late half of the morning after the outage developed just before 10 am. Just before 1 pm Saturday afternoon, the outage numbers quickly jumped to just over 700 customers.
Crews are currently on scene trying to restore power to customers from Strong City south on Kansas Highway 177 to Cottonwood Falls. At this time the cause of the outage still remains unknown.

11 am Saturday: Close to 400 without power in Chase County; Cause undetermined
An undetermined cause has led to nearly 400 Chase County Evergy customers losing power Saturday morning.
The outage has affected customers in Strong City south on Kansas Highway 177 into a portion of Cottonwood Falls. According to Evergy Spokesperson Andrew Baker, the cause has yet to be determined, however, the outage occurred around 10 am Saturday morning.
