Classes aren’t in session at Emporia State University, but work continues on a major renovation project.
Crews continue their work on Abigail Morse Hall as part of a larger project to tear down Northeast Morse and Central Morse while refurbishing Abigail Morse. On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, Director of Residence Life Cass Coughlin said crews are taking advantage of the reduced traffic on campus. He also says the fall and winter months have been busy.
Coughlin also says work on the building’s iconic fireplace began a bit over a week ago.
Abigail Morse is Emporia State’s first residence hall, and there had been some consideration to demolishing it with the rest of the complex. However…
Coughlin says the new layout “honors the original” more completely than past versions. Abigail Morse has housed students, but it has also Army Air cadets during World War II and served as administrative office space in years past.
Weather permitting, substantial completion should be done by June, giving crews enough time to handle punch-list items before students move in for the start of the fall 2020 semester. Coughlin says traffic on 15th Avenue, which cuts east and west through the center of campus, will be back to normal at some point in January.
