Work on the Lyon County Jail’s hot water system will be handled in house following approval of an estimate by the Lyon County Commission Thursday morning.
Commissioners approved and gave directions to Lyon County Facilities Manager Mark McKenna for work on the replacement and installation of new water boilers in the county jail, with costs not to exceed $141,500. The project has been in the works for over the past year and has been put out to bid twice with both bids exceeding the original estimates by $30,000 and $55,000 respectively.
Due to this, McKenna says the facilities department made the decision to handle the work in house. McKenna says this decision will both save the county money and will eliminate the need to shut off hot water to the jail as work gets underway, which would have been required if an outside contractor were to handle the project.
A timeline for the project has not been announced.
In other business, commissioners also approved a three-year uniform rental agreement with Cintas Uniform Services for the County Facilities Department. Additionally, commissioners unanimously approved a contract request from the Lyon County Noxious Weed department with the Kansas Department of Transportation for the 2020 spray season.
Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday morning inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
