While residents already have an abundance of items on their New Year’s resolutions list, the American Red Cross is hopeful they’ll add one more, save a life.
According to American Red Cross Spokesperson Susan Faler, shortages in blood supplies felt throughout the holiday season do not end once the holidays come to a close, in fact, she says they tend to continue well through January into February. Faler says this is partially due to school being out of session.
She says they look forward to once classes resume as they typically see their donation numbers rise when students, especially college students, return from break.
Due to this, Faler says they typically see shortages continue through January into February. Despite these statistics, the Red Cross is affording local residents plenty of opportunities to donate blood with the first local community blood drive of 2020 getting underway Thursday.
The Emporia Presbyterian Church is hosting the drive which runs until 6 pm Thursday and will continue Friday from 8 am to 2 pm. In addition, Emporia High School students have organized an additional blood drive on Friday at Flint Hills Mall, in front of the movie theatre, from 1-6 pm.
Seven additional blood drives will take place throughout the KVOE listening area through January.
