Formal charges have now been filed against a 19-year-old man accused of trying to rob an Emporia motel last week.
Jeremy David Spicer, 19, is accused of attempted aggravated robbery and making false information.
Court documents provided to KVOE News indicate a robbery attempt at the Econo Lodge Hotel, 2511 West 18th, before 5 am Jan. 7. The hotel clerk reported the suspect had come in asking for a room and reached into his backpack in a suspicious manner, telling the clerk to place money on the counter. The clerk ran into the office and called authorities, at which time the suspect fled without any money.
Surveillance video also indicated the suspect tried at least once to open the cash register drawer before speaking with the clerk. Authorities say Spicer was positively identified as the suspect by using surveillance videos, both at the hotel and at other locations in town.
Word on court dates is pending.
