Lyon County Republicans were pleased to welcome four of the Republican candidates seeking to fill the empty US Senate seat which will be vacated later this year following the retirement of Senator Pat Roberts
Candidates Brian Matlock, Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and campaign manager for Congressman Roger Marshall Eric Pahls were each in attendance Tuesday evening. All four individuals took time to speak with KVOE News and outline the major issues they see before Kansas and the nation in the coming years.
For Matlock one of those issues is the rising cost of healthcare, education and housing in Kansas. Matlock says he is the only candidate who has a significant policy approach to this issue.
Kobach tells KVOE News we are currently in a “turning point” and are experiencing a level of combativeness within the Senate we have never seen before. Kobach says at this time the Senate needs a Republican who is “not afraid to stand up for the constitution” as Democrats are “in full attack mode.”
The most pressing issue in Wagle’s mind is the cost of healthcare. Wagle says after Obamacare passed deductibles increased significantly and the cost of pharmaceuticals has doubled.
Wagle says her approach to address this issue is an equal combination of legislation and technology.
Pahls says Marshall has identified numerous issues both at the local and national level. A major focal point for Marshall, according to Pahls, is addressing the current state of the agriculture economy within Kansas. To that end, Marshall has been a major supporter of legislation such as the US, Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA) which according to Pahls is expected to be passed through the Senate and land on the desk of President Donald Trump later this week.
Candidate Steve Roberts was also invited to the meeting but was unable to attend due to a prior engagement. Tuesday’s meeting followed the Lyon County Democrats monthly meeting which saw the attendance of State Democratic Party Secretary George Hanna.
