A suspect is in critical condition following a trooper-involved shooting in Chase County Thursday afternoon.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the incident began as Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers from Troop N, also known as the Domestic Highway Enforcement Team, and the KHP Emergency Services Unit were looking for a wanted suspect. They found him at the Matfield Green service area in Chase County, 30 miles southwest of Emporia. A pursuit then ensued with troopers deploying tire deflation devices to stop the car in question near milepost 107, 20 miles southwest of Emporia.
The suspect, who was armed, got out of the car as a confrontation developed. One of the two troopers on scene shot the suspect at least once. The suspect also was bitten by a K-9 unit on the case.
The suspect was then transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with at least one gunshot wound and several puncture wounds. No troopers were hurt.
The KBI is leading the inquiry and says it will turn over all findings to Chase County Attorney Bill Halvorsen for additional review once its work is complete.
