An Olathe man remains in critical condition following Thursday’s trooper-involved shooting southwest of Emporia.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has announced 40-year-old Dustin Schultz-Bergin was the suspect in a chase that developed at the Kansas Turnpike Matfield Green service area and led to a confrontation with two troopers 20 miles south of Emporia a few minutes later.
The KBI says Schultz-Bergin was armed when he got out of his car. He was shot at least once by a trooper and also bitten at least once by a K-9 helping with the case. Schultz-Bergin was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment. No troopers were hurt in the incident.
The KBI says troopers from the Highway Patrol’s Domestic Highway Enforcement Team, or Troop N, and the Emergency Services Unit were actively looking for Schultz-Bergin but have not detailed why. The Kansas Department of Corrections says Schultz-Bergin was convicted in 2018 on identity theft charges in Wyandotte County and in Johnson County on drug possession charges.
