The 2020 election is now less than 10 months away, and there will be some changes in store for Emporia and Lyon County voters this fall.
County Clerk Tammy Vopat used KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Monday to details several changes in polling places. Voters used to using the Amend Girl Scout Center will now use the Emporia Senior Center.
Voters in Americus will shift from the USD 251 board office to the Americus Senior Center.
Vopat says the changes should offer better traffic and parking flow to voters. The Lyon County Election Office will send formal notice through the mail in about two weeks, with at least one more mailing and possibly two coming before the August primary.
Besides the polling place adjustments, another change has been announced. Lyon County has had one offsite election day with the past two general elections, holding those activities at Flinthills Mall. Vopat says more are coming, both for the primary and general election cycles.
This year’s election features all state lawmakers, all elected county positions and two of the three County Commission positions. The filing deadline is June 1. Constitutional amendments may be on the ballot as well, depending on action by lawmakers as the current legislative session continues.
