The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center had a number of items up for approval during the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action session Thursday morning.
LCECC Director Roxy Van Gundy sought approval from the commission for the county’s annual 911 Call Handling system payment. According to Van Gundy, the system encompasses all Kansas Counties which utilize Kansas 911 and connects them together.
Van Gundy says the system is essentially a fail-safe in the event a communication center were to go down.
The total cost of the payment is just over $73,000. Van Gundy adds, the payment is much like a membership fee for the system and provides for a number of upgrades, the latest of which will be coming in March.
In addition to the payment, commissioners also approved Van Gundy to sign a memorandum of understanding with Emporia State University to overtake control of communications for ESU’s Police Department. Van Gundy says this is a reasonable partnership as they often work with campus police during emergency situations such as utilizing them for backup if additional county and city law enforcement units are not available.
Van Gundy says the changeover will only include the ESU Police communications and they will still have full control of their day-to-day operations on campus. The changeover is expected to be completed by June when the new city/county radio project is completed.
In other business commissioners also approved a registered apprenticeship between the county and Southeast Kansasworks, the purchase of four printers and related equipment for the Motor Vehicle Department at an estimated cost of around $6,500. County Engineer Chip Woods will also offer a proposal for corrugated metal pipe culverts.
The Lyon County Commission will hold its weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
