The Emporia State womens basketball team picked up a big MIAA home win Thursday night out scoring Pittsburg State 68-52 in a match up of two teams tied for 3rd place in the MIAA standings.
The Lady Hornets used a 12-6 run to close out the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the night.
In the 2nd half Emporia State would lead by 22 points. The Lady Hornet defense held Pitt State to 30 percent shooting for the night. And held the MIAAs top scoring offense to 27 points below their season average. Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn called it a gritty win.
Tre’Zure Jobe scored a game high 17 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Morgan Laudan added 14 points. Mollie Mounsey finished with 11 points.
Karsen Schultz finished with 11 points each.
With the win the Emporia State women improve ot 16-5 for the season and 9-3 in the MIAA.
Pittsburg State won the mens game 77-74. The game featured 24 lead changes and 8 ties. Emporia States biggest lead was by 4 points and last held the lead with 2 minutes to play. The Hornets led for over 17 minutes of the game. The biggest lead for Pittsburg State was by 6 points with 56 seconds to play. Coach Craig Doty was pleased with the effort.
Emporia State had 4 players score in double-figures led by Jumah’Ri Turner with 16 points. Mason Thiessen finished with 13 points making all 5 field goal attempts including 3 of 3 from the three point line. Justin Williams also finished with 13 points. Devin Rottweiler added 12 points.
With the loss the Emporia State men are now 10-11 for the season and 4-8 in MIAA play.
The Emporia State women and men will host Missouri Southern Saturday.
