Lyon County Commissioner Dan Slater is not running for re-election, meaning his lengthy career associated with Lyon County government is nearing an end.
Slater confirmed to KVOE News he is not seeking a third term in office, in the process ending a 38-year career linked to Lyon County government that started as a computer programmer in 1982 and then led to years as the county’s controller.
Slater, who has served as a county commissioner since 2012, has some simple advice for the person that replaces him on the board:
Slater listed several accomplishments during his tenure, including financial support of Emporia State University, Newman Regional Health and the Lyon County Fairgrounds through sales tax revenues as opposed to other means like property taxes. One of the bigger accomplishments, however, has been a conscious decision to have debt-free operations. He says that has given Lyon County a lot more flexibility in handling different projects than other counties across the state.
Slater says he plans to spend more time with his family once his term ends in December.
