Local educators, literacy lovers and young readers had the chance to expand their creativity thanks to a special appearance in Emporia Saturday by renowned children’s author Alastair Heim.
Heim appeared at the Emporia Public Library after his original appearance last month was postponed due to less than favorable weather conditions. His appearance featured two special presentations with the first centering on professional development for early childhood educators.
The workshop included tips and tricks Heim has learned over the years to help make storytime with young children as fun and engaging as possible. Once the first session concluded the second presentation focused directly on the children in attendance.
The presentation, appropriately titled “Ideas are Everywhere,” essentially has two main goals. The first is to teach children how to make their ideas a reality while also emphasizing the message that is okay to think differently than others.
Heim, a resident of Kansas City, is well known for his long list of published works which includes his latest work “Quiet Down, Loud Town!,” as well as “The Great Puppy Invasion” and “Love You, Too” amongst others.
Heim’s appearance in Emporia was a collaborative effort between the Emporia Public Library, Kansas Masonic Literacy Center, Mobilizing Literacy and the Lyon County History Center.
