“To get the voice of the people to Washington,” that is the purpose stated by US Senate hopeful Dr. Barbara Bollier as it pertains to her campaign.
Bollier was the featured speaker during the Lyon County Democrats monthly meeting Monday evening at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1980.
When asked what she believes makes someone the ideal candidate to fill the soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat following Senator Pat Roberts’ retirement later this year, Bollier says it is “not about party labels, it’s about the person.”
After a lengthy career as a physician, Bollier ran for, and was elected, to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2010 and eventually made her way to the state Senate in 2016 where she currently serves the Kansas Senate Seventh District in Johnson County. As a physician, Bollier has been a strong constant advocate for affordable healthcare in Kansas, which she says is currently one of the major issues the state is facing.
Bollier states she is not a supporter of the Medicare for All Act which was introduced back in 2003 as a starting point to address the issue. She feels there needs to be a “public buy-in the option” as there are insurance options that are working well throughout the country, and in Kansas.
She finished her thought by stating, “we do not want to require people to make changes they don’t want, but we do want accessibility and affordability.”
Bollier is one of several Democrats seeking election to the Senate including Manhattan City Commissioner Usha Reddi and business owner Robert Tillman. The field is also crowded on the Republican side, including current US Congressman Roger Marshall, former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and current Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle.
