It was not a good night for the Emporia State basketball teams in Fugate Gymnasium Thursday night as Newman swept the Lady Hornets and Hornets.
Newman won the women’s game 68-67. A basket with .2 seconds left gave the Jets the win. The game featured 12 lead changes and 6 ties. Emporia State had a 67-66 lead after Morgan Lauden made 1 of 2 free-throws with 11 seconds to play. Newman would miss a layup with 1 second remaining and get the offensive rebound to set up the game winner. Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said the ball did not bounce their way.
Emporia State was led by Tre’Zure Jobe with 20 points. She is now 15 points shy of the freshman single season scoring record. Mollie Mounsey added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Morgan Lauden finished with 11 points. The Lady Hornets are now 19-6 for the season and 12-4 in the MIAA.
Newman won the mens game 71-61. Emporia State had taken a 49-48 lead with over 7 minutes to play only to be out scored 23-12 the rest of the game. The game was tied at 25 at halftime after the Hornets erased a 9 point first half deficit.Emporia State Coach Craig Doty says they are running out of ammunition.
Duncan Fort led Emporia State with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Keyon Thomas and Justin Williams both finished with 13 points. Jumah’Ri Turner added 12 points. Emporia State played without Mason Thiessen who was out with a concussion.
The Emporia State basketball teams play their final road game Saturday at Central Oklahoma.
