Emporia High biology and health science teacher Erica Huggard is among the teachers honored by Emporia State University as a Master Teacher.
Huggard is an ESU graduate, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education in 2006 before starting her teaching career the following year. She also received a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in English as a second language from Kansas State in 2009.
Huggard is among seven teachers from across Kansas announced Tuesday. She becomes the first USD 253 teacher so honored since Matt Irby two years ago. Nearly 30 Emporia Public Schools teachers have been recognized since the program started in 1954.
Qualifying candidates must be licensed in Kansas and have at least five years of teaching experience in a Kansas pre-kindergarten through 12th grade school setting.
Huggard and the other Master Teachers will be honored at Emporia State’s Master Teacher Day on April 1.
