Emporia firefighters say a small fire at a rural home north of town could have turned out much worse than it did.
Firefighters and Lyon County deputies were toned out to 2147 Kansas Highway 99, about three miles north of Emporia, shortly after noon. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says there was light smoke in the house when they arrived, and the cause turned out to be a lit candle near a wall.
There was some minor fire damage to the wall but no extension elsewhere. No injuries were reported.
