Moderate snow is now expected just west of Emporia through Tuesday afternoon, and as a result the National Weather Service has upgraded an alert for Chase County.
The county had been in a winter weather advisory, along with Greenwood County, from noon to 9 pm. Now Chase County is in a winter storm warning until 6 pm with the prospect of 4 to 6 inches of snowfall, breezy conditions reducing visibility and occasionally slick travel spots. Weather Service meteorologist Chris Jakub (like Jacob) says the winter storm responsible for the snowfall has intensified.
Greenwood County is now in the winter weather advisory, although the expiration time remains the same.
Most of the rest of the KVOE listening area may get a dusting to 1.5 inches of snow through the early evening hours.
Highway conditions west of Emporia are mainly seasonal, but US Highway 50 from the Lyon-Chase county line to the west and Kansas Highway 177 south of Strong City are now completely snow-covered.
