Emporia’s annual celebration of Welsh culture and heritage is coming this weekend.
The annual St. David’s concert will take place at 2:30 pm Sunday at Emporia Presbyterian Church West Campus. It’s the 132nd annual concert locally. Organizer Carolyn Turney says there are some Welsh standards as part of the concert.
In addition to a volunteer choir, several Emporia State music groups are expected to attend.
The concert follows the 33rd annual Welsh Tea in Lebo on Thursday.
Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties were heavily settled by Welsh immigrants in the mid-1800s, making celebrations of St. David prominent in the area. St. David, the country’s patron saint, is thought to have lived in the late Fifth or early Sixth Century. He was considered a warrior priest, teacher, preacher and missionary.
