The Emporia State baseball team out scored Missouri Southern 12-6 to win their MIAA opener.
The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Sam Chaput hit a grand slam to drive in 4 of the runs. Southern would score 5 runs in the 5th to take a 6-5 lead.
Emporia State broke the tie in the bottom of the 5th scoring 5 runs to take a 10-6 lead. Blake Carroll tripled to drive in 3 runs.
Jake Barton was the winning pitcher going 8 innings giving up 6 runs on 7 hits with 10 strikeouts.
Emporia State and Missouri Southern will continue the series Saturday afternoon with first pitch at 2pm at the Trusler Sports Complex.
