Volunteers are in high demand for the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging according to their fourth-quarter report presented to Lyon County Commissioners Thursday morning.
Director Julie Govert Walter presented the report which showed the agency saw a total of 284 different customers and made 1,146 contacts. The agency also distributed a total of 346 commodity boxes with 153 being served at the Friendship Center.
Govert-Walter also noted they had a total of 105 volunteers through the RSVP volunteer program. She says this is 90 short of their actual goal of 195 volunteers. Govert-Walter says they are currently in “dire need” of Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas volunteers and Meals on Wheels drivers.
Govert-Walter adds, due to the need of Meals on Wheels volunteers many area agency staff have had to pick up shifts taking them away from their normal day-to-day responsibilities. If you would like to volunteer for the area agency please contact them by calling (620) 340-8001.
In other business, after concluding a brief public hearing, commissioners approved the vacation of a section of roadway in the 1300 block of Road 190 following a road viewing Wednesday afternoon. The reason for the vacation is due to several reasons according to County Counselor Marc Goodman.
Goodman says the roadway is no longer a utility due to non-use, having become impassable and because it does not justify its own expense to the county. Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the vacation.
Separately, commissioners also approved requests from Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods and the Lyon County Noxious Weeds Department. The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
