The Waverly Regional boy’s championship will be a Lyon County League title rematch between Madison and Lebo Saturday night.
Lebo advanced to the championship game with a hard-fought 42-34 victory over the Olpe Eagles.
Lebo would open the scoring with a Devan McEwen three in the first quarter before a first quarter 10-0 run by the Eagles would see Olpe establish a 7 point lead heading into the half. Lebo would answer back in the third with a 9-0 run of their own to tie the game and eventually retake the lead.
Olpe would regain the lead once more in the fourth but could not maintain the momentum allowing Lebo to put the game out of reach and put an end to the Eagles season. Lebo Head Coach Duane Paul says strong defense was the key to his team’s comeback.
Lebo was led in scoring by McEwen with 18 points. Olpe was led by sophomore Damon Redeker with 12 points. Olpe ends their season with a record of 16-6.
Madison would never trail on their way to the championship matchup defeating Waverly 52-34.
Madison would overcome two early ties in the first half to grab a 23-18 halftime lead. In the second half, Madison would continue to build on the lead with Waverly coming as close as eight in the third before an 11-9 run in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Madison Head Coach Brett Dannels was proud of the win but felt his team needs to loosen up before Saturday’s championship game.
Madison was led in scoring by junior Kelton Buettner with 13 points. Waverly senior Jolan Lacey led all scorers with 14. Waverly ends the season with a final record of 9-13.
Both Lebo and Madison also advance to Sub-State. They will play at either Emporias White Auditorium or at El Dorado.
