The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the pedestrian killed Sunday after being struck by a train east of Emporia.
The individual has been identified as 34-year-old Nolan Purcell of Emporia. Purcell was killed shortly after 11 am Sunday morning after being struck while walking along the train tracks at the crossing between Roads 160 and S five miles east of Emporia according to Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch.
Details pertaining to why Purcell was at the train tracks and what led to him being struck are currently pending.
Further details will likely not be released until after an autopsy is conducted. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.

Noon Saturday: One dead following train pedestrian incident east of Emporia
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed one person was killed after being struck by a train Sunday morning.
A currently unidentified male was struck while walking along the train tracks at the crossing between Roads 160 and S five miles east of Emporia according to Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch. The name of the deceased has not been released, although, Koelsch tells KVOE News identification was found on the body.
Koelsch says the individual may have been from out of state, however, police records indicate there had been previous contact between the deceased and local law enforcement in the past. The name of the deceased will not be released until law enforcement can notify next of kin.
Further details will likely not be released until after an autopsy is conducted. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
