If you have personal documents you want disposed safely, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt has an event for you Tuesday.
The Attorney General’s Office is having a document destruction event from 4-6 pm at the Bowyer Community Building as part of National Consumer Protection Week. On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, Schmidt said these events happen in the spring, but they are a reminder of just how important document security is throughout the year. Schmidt says identity theft is now the top crime across the country and it’s also the fastest-growing crime category.
Identity theft can happen through your computer or smartphone, but there are still “dumpster divers” who will rummage through your trash to find your personal, sensitive information and then abuse it.
Staffers in the Attorney General’s Office and contracted document destruction companies are part of these events. You can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to the event. More information is available at www.ag.ks.gov.
