One person has been taken to Newman Regional Health after a pickup rear-ended a Southern Lyon County school bus near Olpe on Thursday, although the Kansas Highway Patrol is not listing the incident as an injury wreck.
The wreck at the junction of Kansas Highway 99 and Kansas Road happened around 7:40 am, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Troopers confirm reports from Emporia Fire the bus was turning off K-99 when the truck rear-ended it.
The truck driver, 65-year-old Eldon Austin of Eureka, was extricated before coming to Newman Regional Health. The Highway Patrol says around 30 students were on the bus, which was headed to the Olpe school complex. Nobody on the bus was hurt, which was a relief to Olpe High Principal Shane Clark.
