The first of two political appearances in the coming days took place Saturday as Republican US Senate candidate and Kansas Congressman Roger Marshall made an appearance in Americus.
Marshall spent the better part of an hour speaking with local ag producers at the USD 251 North Lyon County School Board Office. Marshall tells KVOE News, of the many concerns he has heard from producers across Kansas, tariffs have slowly begun to drop out of the conversation thanks to work done at the national level to reach a trade deal with China in recent months.
However, taking the place of tariffs at the forefront of conversation recently according to Marshall has been the coronavirus. Marshall says this is not surprising as the agriculture industry, like most other industries, is a worldwide market meaning global issues will have a profound impact.
During his time in Americus Marshall opened up a portion of the meeting to answer questions from the general public. Marshall says these question and answer sessions are very beneficial to him as he looks to prioritize policies and procedures that best benefit the residents of Kansas.
Among the questions Marshall fielded Saturday, one pertained to how Marshall plans to bridge a gap in communication between Democrats and Republicans if he were to be elected to the Senate. Marshall says good bipartisan communication begins with building strong personal relationships with his fellow politicians on both sides of the aisle.
Marshall is among a crowded field of candidates looking to fill the empty seat of retiring US Senator Pat Roberts.
At the start of the week, an individual looking to take Marshall’s place in the US Congress will also be making a stop locally. Democrat Christy Cauble will be making a stop in Emporia Monday evening as the featured guest at the Lyon County Democrats’ monthly meeting at 6:30 pm at the Lyon County Courthouse Annex.
