Additional information continues to come out rapid-fire about coronavirus.
School districts considering a shutdown got some help from the Kansas State School Board of Education, which approved a measure suspending rules for districts if they close due to COVID-19. Districts will not be punished for shortening school days, suspending or canceling classes, education delivery methods and changing graduation requirements.
The Lyon County Emergency Communications Center is now using what’s known as the Emerging Infectious Disease Surveillance Tool. Director Roxanne Van Gundy says this will help give emergency responders and medical staff a way to respond as efficiently as possible.
A news release from USD 253 Emporia Schools Thursday afternoon announced classes will resume as scheduled on Monday as students and faculty return from Spring Break.
The district is currently in close communication with higher education institutions such as FHTC and ESU and are aware of their plans. Collaboration is also ongoing with health professionals at the local level including a recent meeting Thursday afternoon along with representatives of the Lyon County Health Department and the Kansas State Department of Education. The next immediate step for the district will be a meeting with building principals at 10:15 am Monday following the conclusion of Spring Break.
