(NEW YORK-ABCNews) — As more people across the United States test positive for the novel coronavirus, the health emergency is forcing changes to major sporting events. The NCAA has announced that the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and all remaining NCAA winter and spring championships have been canceled.
That includes the Division II womens Central Regional tournament that was scheduled to be played beginning tomorrow. That ends the season for the Emporia State womens basketball team.
It also includes the Division II indoor track and field championships. Emporia State had 4 athletes slated to compete Taysean Goodwin in the 200 and 400 meter dashes and as part of the 4 by 400 relay with Brandon Rhone, Guy Ramos and Hayden Goodpaster.
That also means that all spring sports championships for baseball, softball, tennis and Track and Field have been canceled.
he MIAA and its member institutions, including Emporia State, announce the suspension of all MIAA intercollegiate sports activities, practice and competition, effective 11 p.m., March 12, 2020. The Association’s decision is the result of ongoing consultation with campus leaders, and it follows the decision today by the NCAA to cancel all winter and spring championships for all three divisions. Emporia State softball Coach April Rosales said it was tough telling her team that their season was on hold.
The indefinite suspension applies to all institutional practices and competitions in any MIAA sport, regardless of season, until further notice.
The University of Kansas has announced that they have canceled all athletic travel indefinitely. In addition, all home and away athletics events have been suspended indefinitely.
Kansas State has cancelled all in-season competition home and away until Monday, March 30.
Also all out-of-season practices have also been suspended until Monday, March 30.
