The social and schedule landscape continues to change in light of coronavirus.
The virus has now canceled two major sporting events hosted in Emporia — the Class 5A state basketball tournament as part of all KSHSAA tourneys and, now, the Glass Blown Open at the end of April. Dynamic Discs owner and tourney organizer Jeremy Rusco:
Rusco says around 1,600 players were coming to Emporia, with another 900 staff and volunteers attending as a result of the tourney.
Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Susan Rathke says there will be a sizeable financial hit to the community with these two events off the calendar, but she says Emporia has a reputation that will still bring people here for different sports.
Organizers of another large-scale event, the Dirty Kanza, say they are “closely monitoring” the COVID-19 situation but are not making any changes at this time.
For local and area towns, Burlington is telling its residents to pay utilities and other city bills by using the dropbox at City Hall or by going online. Emporia, meanwhile, is not announcing any changes in its operations. City Manager Mark McAnarney says the city is taking its cue from health officials and is discussing internal operations as the situation develops.

On top of everything else to process with coronavirus, KDHE says spam text messages are being sent to residents announcing allegedly-confirmed cases of COVID-19 at different hospitals. KDHE does not make announcements using text messages. Instead, it posts updates on its website, www.kdheks.gov/coronavirus.
