Monday will be a day off for USD 253 Emporia students, not staff, as the district reacts to the rapidly-developing coronavirus situation.
Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren says the latest district-wide communication Thursday revealed a number of families and staff traveled either out of state or out of country during spring break that concludes this weekend. Landgren says the district is collecting travel and health information as requested by Lyon County Public Health through an Out of State/Country Travel Form. As the collection process continues, all Emporia schools will be closed Monday. School-related activities and RecXtra will be canceled.
Staff, meanwhile, are expected to report Monday and will receive more information about schedules and other “essential details.”
Medically fragile students and staff or those with compromised immune systems should call their doctors to see if attending class is advisable and get paperwork excusing them if it isn’t.
Meanwhile, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office announced numerous operational changes related to coronavirus. The Law Enforcement Center lobby and Detention Center are now closed to the public until further notice, while inmates are been screened for symptoms as they are first processed. Deputies are also encouraging people to call 341-3205 to report crimes and to meet deputies outside their residences for face-to-face discussions. External Detention Center providers, including clergy and mental health providers, will not be allowed until further notice and ride-alongs are suspended.
Through March, offender registration will take place via phone at 341-3206 between 8 am and 4 pm weekdays. Inmates on work release or treatment will have release suspended until further notice, although the Sheriff’s Office is working out details so this change will not affect employment or work status.
