Coronavirus may have halted school for the week, but it hasn’t stopped planning for USD 253 Emporia’s major facility improvements over the next three years.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Monday, Superintendent Kevin Case said work is well underway at Walnut, Emporia High School and a new early learning center to replace Maynard. Of the three, Walnut is the furthest ahead.
For the facilities not involved in the first wave of construction, McCownGordon project estimator Charlie Ochs says work will start on those buildings after design work and planning comes to an end for the first three buildings.
Case credited the construction team including McCown Gordon and HTK Architects for its work in positioning the district for the work ahead. Ochs, meanwhile, said there are no current plans to delay construction with bids not going out until August or September and construction not beginning until October at the earliest.
The renovations are taking place at every Emporia school over the next three years after a $78 million bond package was approved by voters last fall.
