New paths to healthier food options are coming to Emporia following approval by city commissioners Wednesday evening.
Commissioners approved a bid from Emporia Construction and remodeling Inc. for the installation of new crosswalks and ADA curb ramps in two separate locations, 12th Ave. from Lakeview to Peyton and US Highway 50 from Industrial Road to Anderson. According to City Engineer Jim Ubert, this is only a portion of the project with more work coming in the future.
The purpose for limitation of work is due to the base bid from Emporia construction coming in higher than the project’s budgeted amount. The city received $100,000 from Blue Cross Blue Shield through its Safe Routes to Healthy Food grant program to cover the majority of the project’s cost. Ubert says the remainder of work, the installation of a crosswalk at the intersection of 24th and Westridge, will take place once more funds are allocated.
Additionally, commissioners were set to approve an agreement between the city and Emporia Recreation Commission for the operation of the Jone’s Aquatic Center for the 2020 season, however, commissioners chose to table the item until a later date. This followed similar action by the ERC during their monthly meeting Monday evening.
Commissioners then adjourned the meeting to 9:30 am next Wednesday inside the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium.
