USD 253 Emporia is planning for more participation in its Grab and Go meal program with more locations to be added effective Monday.
Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren says free meals will now be available at Riverside, Village, Walnut, William Allen White elementary schools. Logan Avenue Elementary and Emporia Middle School will continue service along with the new locations. Landgren tells KVOE News this will see the Food Service department and district volunteers at nearly full-speed when compared to normal school days.
The program provides free same-day lunches and next-day breakfasts to students up to age 18. Meals are available from 11:30 am to 1 pm weekdays for all students in a given vehicle. Parents and guardians cannot get meals for students not in the line.
The district served close to 1,200 lunches from Wednesday to Friday, going from 308 Wednesday to 420 Thursday to 468 Friday. An identical number of breakfasts were served over the three days.
Virtually all area districts have similar programs either underway as of last week or beginning Monday.
