Emporia and Olpe firefighters handled two small grass fires that developed Saturday, one near the Emporia Municipal Airport and one near Hartford.
Emporia Fire Ballation Chief Eron Steinlage says crews from Lyon County District 4, the city’s rural unit, and Olpe went to the 1300 block of Road K, just north of the airport, shortly after 4:15 pm. Just after 5 pm, or shortly after getting that fire out, both fire departments then went to the 1100 block of Road T, about 10 miles east-southeast of the airport and five miles west of Hartford, for a separate blaze.
The fire just north of the airport burned about two acres, while the fire near Hartford burned about 20 acres before they were put out. Steinlage says both fires were originally controlled burns but got out of control. There were no injuries and no buildings damaged with either fire.
