While school districts continue efforts to provide students with essential meals, local residents and churches are joining the efforts.
Monday, Heritage Pentecostal Church began offering a week of free meals to local families. The church will be giving away 50 meals each day, Monday through Saturday, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm or until supplies last.
Heritage Church Pastor Keith Abernathy says the idea for the service came about after a local family reached out to the church seeking assistance.
All meals will be served at the church, located at 1827 Road G in Emporia. Abernathy says there is no limit for how many meals a family may pick up, however, he asks that all family members who will be receiving a meal be present at the time they are picked up. The meals will be available on a first-come first-serve basis.
Abernathy says they are taking the efforts on a weekly basis and will continue serving food for as long as there is a demand for them. For more information, or to schedule a pickup, contact the church by calling 620-803-7571.
