Classes are resuming Monday for USD 386 Madison-Virgil after the board of education approved the district’s continuous learning plan in a special meeting Sunday evening.
USD 386 Superintendent Stu Moeckel says, much like other districts, they will be embracing an online education model for the remainder of the school year. Moeckel tells KVOE News the district has been working with the local internet provider in order to help ensure all families and students have the best access to internet services possible.
According to Moeckel a recent survey indicated roughly only 10 percent of district families had internet access, hence the partnership with their local service provider. Additionally, Moeckel says students will be utilizing their district-issued I-pads to help reduce stress on families who may either have no devices for students to use or may only have one household device.
Along with the online learning option, teachers have also developed “enrichment activities” for those who may not have access to the internet. Moeckel tells KVOE News there will be no traditional schedule when classes resume, however, teachers have reached out to their students in order to gauge the best times for them to engage in Zoom sessions.
Moeckel says the reason for not having a set schedule is to best help meet the need of parents and that does not include having students doing classwork from 8-3 in a non classroom setting. Moeckel anticipates much of the first week will include observing, reporting and adjusting as needed to help the model best suit student needs.
