COVID-19 has caused financial hardship for millions of people across America. Causing some to wonder how they will be able to afford housing cost. But on March 17, Governor Laura Kelly issued an executive order which halts rental evictions, and mortgage foreclosures in the state of Kansas until May 1.
When speaking with KVOE, Tenant and Landlord Counselor for Housing and Credit Counseling Teresa Baker outlined how this new order helps tenants prioritize necessities during these tough financial times.
Baker continued on to state that tenants who withhold rent must have been specifically affected by COVID-19. Meaning they must have had a loss of income due to the disease, or seen a depletion of their financial resources to a point where they would be unable to afford necessities such as food, medicine, supplies, or other services if they were to pay for their housing.
