Outdoor burning will be discouraged Wednesday and Thursday as the Flint Hills Smoke Management Plan gets underway.
Wind gusts will be as high as 30 to 35 mph during the afternoon hours Wednesday and as high as 30 mph Wednesday evening to at least Thursday afternoon, making fires difficult to control and also making it easier for prior fires to rekindle. Residents who have done controlled burns earlier this week are urged to check them and take extra steps so they don’t refire between now and late Thursday afternoon.
Because the wind speeds will be above 15 mph for most of Wednesday and Thursday, all outdoor burning in the Emporia city limits will be banned.
The Smoke Management Plan limits outdoor burning to rangeland burns and a handful of exceptions, including ceremonial fires and grilling, through April. Lyon and all surrounding counties are included.
