Add Emporia State’s Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track to the list of local facilities closed due to coronavirus.
On KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday, ESU Associate Athletic Director and head of media relations Don Weast said this follows similar action for other athletic facilities on campus — and also follows guidance from NCAA Chief Medical Officer Brian Hainline, who says it’s best not to share sports balls because it’s unclear how long the virus can stay on them.
Weast says the stadium and track have been extremely popular exercise spots for local and area residents.
The stadium’s turf field will get cleaned and sanitized during the closure. Weast says the turf was on schedule for a cleaning, but this will allow for a deeper cleaning process.
