Two people arrested after separate incidents in Lyon County late last week have now been formally charged.
Matthew Quisenberry, 25, now faces single charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia after an incident in central Emporia on March 27. Charges were announced after Quisenberry reportedly suffered a seizure in the 900 block of Lawrence and then confronted Emporia Police officers, saying they had taken his illegal drugs. He allegedly drew a knife and was Tasered when he did not comply with officer commands to stand down.
Also, 28-year-old Robert Thomas Smith of Gridley is charged with aggravated battery after a fight March 27 in Hartford. Smith is accused of beating a Hartford man, causing him to get medical treatment at Newman Regional Health and, later, Stormont-Vail in Topeka hospital for a skull fracture and possible brain hemorrhage. The court affidavit indicates the fight developed after a small debt from a pool game.
First court appearances have already taken place for both men. Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman says both are set for separate preliminary hearings June 24. Lyon County District Court currently has jury trials, preliminary hearings and several other types of hearings on hold until at least June 1 due to coronavirus.
