Typically, when we say an active weather period is coming in April, the thought is all about severe weather. There is a severe weather risk this Easter weekend, but that’s not all the weather in the upcoming seven-day forecast.
Shower and storm chances pick up by late afternoon Saturday, and there is a marginal risk of severe weather areawide. Hail is the main issue areawide, with wind another concern just west of Emporia. Storms could also bring spotty heavy rain.
High winds — perhaps as high as 60 mph, or above baseline severe weather criteria — kick in early Sunday morning. Chase County is in a high wind watch from 7am Sunday to 1 am Monday, while Morris County is in a high wind watch from 7 am to 10 pm.
Sunday also has the area in a marginal-to-slight severe weather risk. All hazards are possible, but the risk here is much lower than what’s expected for the Gulf states. A significant severe weather outbreak has been predicted for parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.
Sunday night begins a period where hard freezes or frosty conditions will be prevalent overnight. Sunday night’s low is expected around 26 in Emporia with lower temps in outlying areas, and overnight lows may not stay above freezing until Wednesday night.
