Governor Laura Kelly has extended the statewide stay-home order.
The order will now remain in effect through May 3. Governor Kelly did not mention any adjustments to the order, which was supposed to end this upcoming Sunday.
The extension comes as state-wide cases, unfortunately, continue increasing along with the number of new counties announcing confirmed cases.
Also during her briefing, the governor said state leaders are discussing plans for re-opening the economy — something an increasing number of lawmakers are calling for. However, she also says it’s clear life won’t return to normal until scientists develop a vaccine, and her goal is to reopen the economy when it’s safe to do so.
Governor Kelly reached her decision on the extension after discussions with Kansas City-area mayors and with Missouri Governor Mike Parson. She is in contact now with Colorado Governor Jared Polis (POH-liss) to coordinate COVID-19-related matters for western Kansas residents.
Following Wednesday’s briefing, Governor Kelly convened with the state financing council to discuss a $17 million emergency hospital grant program. Many state hospitals have taken action in recent months to preserve essential resources including ramping back or completely stopping elective procedures.
Because of this Kelly says hospitals have forfeited a “substantial portion of the revenue that keeps them in business.” She says many hospitals are now struggling just to make payroll which is where the grant program will come into play.
Governor Kelly says “We need our hospitals focused on saving lives, not keeping the lights on. ”
Governor Kelly is scheduled to continue her daily briefings at 2 pm Thursday. You can listen to the press conference in its entirety on KVOE 1400 am and 96.9 fm.
