As the US Census adjusts its operations due to coronavirus, the Census Bureau reports close to half all area residents have reported.
Lyon County’s self-response rate is over 51 percent, with the vast majority — over 43 percent — replying by Internet. For Emporia, the self-response rate is just over 50 percent with an Internet reply rate of 44 percent.
In 2010, the self-response rate was 69.4 percent for Emporia and 68 percent for the county.
Across the area, Lyon County has the highest self-reporting rate, just ahead of Osage County. Greenwood County has the lowest at 41 percent.
This comes as the Census Bureau says all field operations should resume after June 1. It has requested an extra 120 days to finish its back-end work and deliver the final apportionment counts. This would put the field data collection and self-response deadline to Oct. 31, which would then put delivery of apportionment counts to President Trump no later than April 30, 2021, and redistricting data to states no later than July 31, 2021.
Members of the Kansas Counts Committee that have been leading the Census effort at the local and state level will have an update on Friday’s Talk of Emporia. Click here for a link to the US Census data.
