Coronavirus is not slowing down operations for the Lyon County Appraiser’s office, however, it is slightly altering how those operations are conducted.
During the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action session Thursday morning, county appraiser Ryan Janzen explained the appraiser’s office is still on track to send out personal property and change notices as scheduled. However; the office will be altering its annual summer property inspection process slightly.
According to Janzen, the department will be conducting the inspections through two different processes. The first will be a “desktop” review utilizing aerial photography of each property.
Janzen says, the department will also conduct a visual inspection of the property, however, rather than walking the property, as in years past, they will conduct the inspection from a vehicle and essentially drive the property. Janzen says it is important for the department to still “put eyes” on each property during the inspections.
The annual inspections occur on a six-year cycle, of which the county is currently in year three. Janzen says this year’s inspections will be taking place in the “northern third of the county” and will include the cities of Reading, Allen, Admire, Miller and Bushong.
The inspections are done to confirm the property characteristics which play a pivotal role in setting property values down the road.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am. The meeting will be viewable on the county’s Facebook page.
